Marshmallow is a confection that is characteristically soft and spongy. It is made from sugar, water, and a gelatin-like substance such as glucose or corn syrup, whipped to a soft consistency, and molded into various shapes. Some recipes may also include flavorings like vanilla. The earliest versions of marshmallows can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where the sap from the root of the marshmallow plant (Althaea officinalis) was boiled with honey. Modern marshmallows, however, no longer typically contain the marshmallow plant. Today, marshmallows are widely used in baking, confectionery, and as toppings for desserts and beverages. They are commonly toasted over a fire, added to hot chocolate, or used as an ingredient in dishes like Rice Krispies treats.
